UPDATE – David Yurman: Friends & Family Sale

August 29th, 2009 grace No comments

WOW! What a difference 20% makes. There was still no line outside to get into the sale. But inside, it was packed. The ring counters were most crowded. Tomorrow will be the last day of the sale. All the jewelry is still 30 – 70% off but with an additional 20% markdown. I saw a few cute rings hovering around $150 – $300 but ultimately bought an onyx silver/18k gold bangle for $450ish. If you can’t make it to the sale don’t fret; DY is hosting another sale later this year in October. Here are a few photos:

Bon Chon: Fried Chicken Korean-Style

Boka
9 St. Mark’s
New York, NY

It’s been rainy and cold all day in NYC. It feels more like fall than summer. Today, my husband and brother spent the day at The Barclay’s PGA Golf Tournament. They told me to meet them at Boka at 7pm. Apparently, they had some bad craving for some comfort food. I’ve had bon chon chicken before, but not at Boka. The chicken comes in two flavors: soy garlic or spicy hot. Both are very good. The skin is very crispy and the chicken is tender. From 5 to 8pm, they usually have a happy hour deal going on with all you can eat bon chon and all you can drink beer for $23. It’s $18.95 for a 20-piece and a pitcher of Sapporo is $16.95 a la carte. Like many Korean bon chon eateries, this restaurant also looks pretty nice, featuring exposed brick walls and lounge-like lighting. It’s a good place to pre-game with a group of friends.

David Yurman – Friends & Family Sale

August 28th, 2009 grace No comments

Friends & family company sales are really opened to the everyone and their mothers now a days. No invitation required.

Location:
Altman Building
135 W. 18th Street (bt. 6th & 7th Avenue)
New York, NY

When:
Fri. (8/28) 8am – 8pm, Sat. (8/29) 9am – 6pm, Sun. (8/30) – 9am – 5pm

When I dropped by yesterday, there was no line to get in. It wasn’t crowded but there were 20+ people browsing around. You can definitely drop by during your lunch hour and make it back to work on time without getting fired.

The venue space is spacious and has good lighting for the baubles. All the jewelry are showcased as they would at a retail store. The sales people are friendly. However, most discounts were set at 30% for more current styles, signature links and bangles with semi-precious stones. Some of the higher end stuff was marked down to 40% off retail prices. I saw a few watches for both men and women. There’s a few small cases towards the back marked down to 70% off. These were mostly thin bangles with floating semi-precious stones, not their signature thick cable bangles.

I’ve seen David Yurman marked down to 25% off at Bloomingdales. For the past few years just before the holiday season, DY has also set up a pop-up store at Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets with much better discounts. Most jewelry and watches were marked down to around 50% off there. This F&F sale is not revolutionary but if you’re lusting over some new David Yurman bling, head over, you’ll be sure to find something. There’s litterally thousands of pieces there to look over. Good luck!

Here are a few photos from the sale:

The look: Hanging out on a lazy Sunday afternoon

August 17th, 2009 kate No comments

On this sweltering Sunday afternoon, I had the worse craving for some Grimaldi’s pizza. For all you out there that have not yet sunk your teeth into a delicious Grimaldi’s pie, most on the 1 hr+ line outside the Dumbo staple would agree that its a must try! So what’s a girl to wear on a hot and humid Sunday to what in line for pizza?

Laura Mercier – First Blush Palette

A lot of girls love Laura Mercier. I am one of those girls. I find her makeup to be very feminine and natural. I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I do try to put on some lipstick, blush and mascara on those days I need a need a little help. My purse feels heavy enough – I hate lugging around two shades of lipstick, a blush compact, eye shadow, etc. everyday – when I don’t even wear makeup regularly. Browsing around in Sephora the other day I found myself this little beauty. The case is an uber soft pink – it was love at first site. Inside are three shades of eye shadow, three shades of lipstick, and two shades of blush. The colors are perfect for Monday – Friday. I know I will use all these colors. There’re no tacky turquoises, leprechaun greens or glittery purples. It’s just me but better.

The Time Traveler’s Wife: A Book Review

August 13th, 2009 grace 2 comments

Picture 1Like most people, I tend to catch up on my reading list in the summer. My latest conquest is The Time Traveler’s Wife. I started reading the book three days ago.  I got to work early today (a rarity) and I have about 30 pages left to read until I am finished. I look around and no one is here yet and so I decide to read. This was a bad idea. I am tearing up and come very close to sobbing out loud as I turn each page…506…507…508…..536 (Period). I hate for this book to be over. I am not ready for it to be over. I read it way to fast and I’m still immersed in this story. I Google for discussions on this book and unfortunately do not find any good ones. I am hoping that there are many people currently reading this book, about to finish, since the movie is coming out in a few days. Here are some of my thoughts on The Time Traveler’s Wife:

Love in real life is not all peaches and cream. There are ups and down. Audrey Niffenegger, the author, was able to capture all the highs and the lows of love. The reader is captivated by the nature of the couple’s first real meeting, when they make love, fall in love and get marry. But Audrey is not afraid to paint love in an ugly light. Henry and Clare try unsuccessfully for years to have a child and it tears away at the seams of their marriage. They bury the corpses of their dead fetuses. Clare admits to secretly enjoy being by herself sometimes when Henry time travels. The couple goes through the constraints of money and deals with the jealousy of past love affairs. Henry and Clare’s love story is truthful and believable.

Verdict: MUST READ
