When in Rome, Do as Romans Do

October 30th, 2009 grace No comments

You can get some serious palette satisfaction in Rome. Two foods seem to be of primary focus in Rome – gelato and pizza. In NY, I have access to Little Italy’s Ferrara and it’s pretty good. I always go there for my gelatos. My first two gelato experiences in Rome were no match to Ferrara’s. Sorely dissapointed, I went a searching for a better Gelato experience.

Talking to locals and other travelers, many recommended Il Gelato di San Crispino. It’s a simple gelaterie on a small street near Trevi Fountain, not too difficult to locate. I ordered three scoops- Honey, Pear and Chocolate. It was amazing. In fact, it was the best Gelato I ever had and was not able to find better in Florence or Venice. It’s so decadent, smooth and creamy. It tastes very simple and clean, yet the flavors are all explosive. I joked that I spent all my EUROs on gelatos but it might very well be true. I had San Crispino’s eleven more times before I left Rome. A medium cup is 4.50€ or about close to $7 US. You do the math.

Another contender for the best gelaterie in Rome is Giolitti. The streets in Rome are narrow, short and a plenty. I was never able to find Giolitti.

If you ever find your way to either places, let me know how you like it.
